Cannot Connect to Data Adaptor

Using MD 18.4, DOORS 9.3
* inside a controlled area so we must use these versions *

when using the Datahub to 'Copy with Sync' copy runs for a while then after getting the 'Copy with Sync' dialog and entering:
- 'one way sync to MagicDraw'
- 'requirement' in the 'MagicDraw side'
- and 'select attributes to sync'
we press OK and get an error dialog with this message

Cannot connect to {GlobalId,objectID=DS_MagicDraw,driverID=MagicDraw,dataSourceID=DS_MagicDraw,machineId=DHMID_*,*,*,*,dataSourcePath=MagicDraw} data adapter.

we have 24 MD users, using a common model stored in Teamwork Server... this error is on about half of the Machines (seems to be tied to Machines and not user accounts)
