Please, please allow actors on class diagrams

Postby Andrew McVeigh » Sat Jan 13, 2001 2:26 pm

Hi,

I am making a plea to be allowed to have actors on class diagrams. Without
this feature, MagicDraw is not useful for analysis. I notice that MD4.0
does not allow actors of any sort on class diagrams.

Some reasons for allowing actors on class diagrams:

1) "Robustness analysis" (classification of analysis elements in boundary,
entity and controller stereotypes) makes heavy use of actors on class
diagrams.

This is part of the Unified Software Process!!! See the Amigo's book on the
subject (Unified Software Development Process, Jacobsen et al, page 47,
figure 3.6). There are many diagrams in this book which combine actors and
classes on the same diagram.

2) UML allows it

See the spec -- Actor is a stereotype of Classifier, and Classifiers are
allowed on class diagrams.

3) Rational Rose allows it

It is used all the time in my work, and in many other examples I have seen
in an industrial context.

Basically, I cannot imagine performing analysis without actors allowable on
class diagrams. It is obviously not hard for MagicDraw to do, as it used to
do it. Please, please, reallow this feature, or MagicDraw will not be
useful for the analysis phase of a project.

p.s. I notice that MD4.0 also does not have the boundary, controller and
entity stereotypes pre-
defined. Is this omission intentional?

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for remarks.
We have changed functionality by your request.
From now you can drag actor from browser to class diagram.
Please check 4.0 final version at beginning of February.
