Referencing specific diagrams and tables

Hi,
I am working on creating a Document Report Designer Diagram, which was exciting to me because I am not good at scripting. I am looking to create a document where I reference specific diagrams or tables, but I cannot figure out how. I can only figure how to return an entire list of a certain type of element or diagram and I have no control over the order in which they appear. Is it possible to reference an element by the element ID or something similar?
I think what I really would like is to use the Document Modeling Plugin, but it appears it has been discontinued with the 2021x version.
